Musique Cordiale: a great little participation festival in the south of France
Music has what sometimes seems like an unbreachable divide between those who do it (the performers) and those who are done to (the punters). But just occasionally the wall comes down – at places like Dartington or St Endellion which confuse the notions of festival, summer-school and holiday, and run programmes where you’re in the audience one minute but in a choir or orchestra the next. And I’ve just encountered a sort of French Endellion that takes place in/around a hilltop town called Seillans in Provence, an hour’s drive out of Nice.

It’s not uncommon for older singers to slip into stage-directing when the end of the voice is nigh, but for younger ones with flourishing careers it’s rare. So it was interesting to find Andrew Staples, one of Britain’s up-and-coming young tenors, not just stepping back across the footlights into dramaturgy but setting up a new company, Vignette Productions, to do it.
