Summer strings in sunny Seillans
– inviting young talent to learn with experienced teachers and to play with orchestra professionals!
Thursday 26 July – Saturday 4 August 2018: applications open
Residential summer school for advanced string players situated in the exquisite hilltop village of Seillans in the South of France (1hr from Nice)
Levon Chilingirian & Susie Mészáros, members of the celebrated Chilingirian String Quartet and professors at the Royal Academy of Music, the Royal College of Music, the Guildhall and the Royal Northern College of Music, will again be joined this year by Jane Hyland, former principal cellist of the BBC Symphony and BBC Welsh Orchestras, to give masterclasses, chamber music coaching and orchestral training (and piano accompanist Philip Saudek). The course will culminate in two concerts: one showcasing the students’ chamber, solo and ensemble work and the other playing next to a professional player in a Festival Orchestra concert, conducted by James Lowe.
With a maximum 12 students in the group, the MC Academy is much more intimate that many summer courses, with each participant receiving a huge amount of attention from their individual instrument tutor as well as chamber and orchestral training together.
Hosted in a Provençal family residence, students enjoy eight days of intensive tuition with free time for swimming & relaxing.. The Academy students are encouraged to attend evening Festival concerts in the region’s spectacular chapels and churches followed by al fresco dinners with the Festival musicians and team.
Minimum age: 15, ABRSM Grade 8+ (or equivalent).
Please return the completed form by email to firstname.lastname@example.org or by post to the address below by 31 May 2018 – but please contact us informally as early as possible to express an interest and explore funding possibilities.

To other students from Europe
The full amount payable is 980€ plus the cost of travel to Seillans (or a nearby airport or station). However, The Musique-Cordiale Trust, our independent UK charity, does offer a limited number of BURSARIES including the above 100% bursary for a student from the Provence region and other bursaries (stipends) for students currently resident or born in European (Council of Europe not just EU) countries. We ask only for an application and initial deposit of 50€ (returnable if not accepted or if a required bursary is not approved). If required, there is then a separate bursary application that needs to be completed **
We do seek a balance of paying and bursaried (partial or full) students for the Academy to be viable; but we welcome initial contacts from anyone who is interested (students, parents, teachers or sponsors). In recent years, we have allocated 1 or 2 full bursaries PLUS 3 or 4 partial bursaries. So at least half of our students have not had to pay full fees. However, we do need to encourage students to look for funding from other sources (e.g. competitions, local charities, their schools and conservatoires in addition to family members) as well as seeking support from our charity. We encourage applicants to contact us informally in the first instance so that we can all do our best to find ways in which you can participate affordably, according to your ability, potential and situation.
A deposit of 50€ euros or £50 GBP is payable within 7 days of submitting your application. Once your application is accepted, you can make the full payment on the website via PayPal, by bank transfer/virement or by cheque: we will send you an invoice first.
