“The Four Seasons” by Vivaldi & Handel’s “Dixit Dominus” + Purcell’s “Abdelazar Suite” – Dixit Dominus is one of Handel’s best-loved works, performed over the years by Musique-Cordiale by choirs of various sizes, including once previously by a choir of soloists conducted by David Bates and by the full Festival Choir in various churches, including in Faversham, Kent. It is a psalm setting by George Frideric Handel. It uses the Latin text of Psalm 110, which begins with the words Dixit Dominus (“The Lord Said”). The work was completed in April 1707 while Handel was living in Italy. It is Handel’s earliest surviving autograph. It was written in the Baroque style of the period and is scored for five vocal soloists (SSATB), five-part chorus, strings and continuo. It is thought that the work was first performed on 16 July 1707 in the Church of Santa Maria in Montesanto. Our soloists for Dixit Dominus are: Rebecca Hardwick & Hannah Diennes-Williams (soprano), Collin Shay (counter-tenor), Aidan Coburn (tenor) & Patrick Alexander Keefe (baritone). The concert, features the ever popular Seasons of Vivaldi which we have previously performed in Bagnols-en-Forêt & Fayence in recent years. This time, the violin soloists are Anna Tulshinskaya, who has first played with us in 2024 & Oliver Cave, with us since 2018.
