This free concert, in the delightful and historic Chapelle Notre-Dame de l’Ormeau, offers two works by the much-loved French composers Ravel and Debussy. Le Tombeau de Couperin (arranged for wind quintet from the original piano version) pays tribute to the French 18thcentury musical tradition, and combines a range of mood from the playful to the solemn. Debussy wrote just this one string quartet; it is in four movements, with a beautiful and highly lyrical slow movement.

In this concert, leading musicians from Musique Cordiale are showcased. The gloriously “autumnal” slow movement from the famous Mozart clarinet concerto makes a fine contrast with the Bach cantata BWV 209, “Non sa che sia dolore”, where solo flute and high soprano voice interweave to create a magical effect. Rameau’s lively and engaging suite from his opera-ballet Les Indes Galantes is written for chamber orchestra, while Saint-Saens’ “Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso” makes the most of the violinist’s virtuoso technique. Rachmaninov’s Vocalise is a very popular work, perhaps owing to its sweet poignancy and melodious charm, which will be followed by some popular dances from Europe.

The enchanting setting of the church at Mons forms the perfect venue for this chamber concert. The concert starts with Debussy’s only string quartet in four movements, with a beautiful and lyrical slow movement. Ravel’s Le Tombeau de Couperin (arranged for wind quintet from the original piano version) was written during the First World War and pays tribute to the French 18th century musical French tradition. The concert ends with the sublime quintet for clarinet and strings by Mozart.

Two contrasting concerti form the centrepiece of this programme. Bach’s soaring double concerto for oboe and violin forms a huge contrast with the declamatory splendour of Saint-Saëns’ cello concerto. Rachmaninov’s Vocalise is a very popular work, perhaps due to its sweet poignancy and melodious charm. Finally, the glorious Introduction and Allegro for strings by Edward Elgar provides a suitable climax to an evening of splendid music making.

This year we welcome the return of pianist Jean-Marie Reboul, an extremely versatile performer of both classical music and jazz. He will play with the bass player from Switzerland, Claude Meier, and will be joined by Samuel Rohrer the celebrated young Swiss drummer who performs internationally with many groups. We are also thrilled that the emerging jazz star from London, Louise Golbey is able to join us with her guitarist Johny Dutoit. These musicians will meet for the first time in Seillans, and the evening promises to include different styles of jazz, which will appeal to the wide-ranging tastes of our jazz cognoscenti.

Saint-Saëns’ “Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso” is one of the most virtuoso pieces in the violin repertoire. Britten’s ‘Les Illuminations’ will be performed by Andrew Staples. George Humphreys and soprano Dima Bawab perform Mozart’s dramatic arias to complete the evening’s vocal content. Moritz Roelcke joins the orchestra for the sublime slow movement from Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto and the concert ends with Mozart’s spirited Haffner Symphony.

One of the main aims of Musique Cordiale is to promote up and coming young soloists, and to give them the opportunity to perform works of their choice with piano. This evening, Bach cantata BWV 209 “Non sa che sia dolore”, where solo flute and high soprano voice interweave to create a magical effect The glorious quintet for clarinet and strings by Mozart, featuring some of the festival’s most talented musicians will be performed for a second time. Jean Marie Reboul will accompany singers and players in a programme of varied music and entertaining melodies for the rest of the evening.

Andrew Staples returns to Musique Cordiale for the sixth year with a group of male singers to form a Consort. To start the concert they will perform Bach’s beautiful Lutheran Mass in G minor, which includes two women’s voices.
This will be followed by a work specially commissioned for the festival by the English composer, Cecilia McDowall. Night Flight marks the centenary of the first woman to fly across the Channel, the American aviatrix, Harriet Quimby, who flew the Louis Blériot route in reverse from Dover to Calais, 1912. Written for a cappella consort and cello solo these three songs are settings of beautiful poems by the British poet, Sheila Bryer. Each song has something about the night or flight about it. In each of the three movements much of the solo cello writing is high, using the range of the instrument that is most sonorous and eloquent and at times ethereal. Tonight we perform the final movement, Before Dawn, which concludes Night Flight with an evocation of a fragrant summer’s night in the hour before dawn when the garden, stripped of light and shade is utterly itself: a place of solid stillness.

We are delighted to come to Callian Church for the first time in Musique’s Cordiale’s eight-year history for a concert that features Mozart’s wonderful C Minor Mass for choir, soloists and orchestra. The Mass contains some of his finest choral music, including the exhilarating eight part fugal setting of Osanna in Excelsis. Mozart wrote the virtuoso soprano solo part for his wife, Constanze. During the first half of the concert, Barber’s famous Adagio forms a contrast to the Madrigali of the contemporary American composer Morten Lauridsen. The latter work is a setting of Italian Renaissance poems, which are unified textually by references to the element of fire. Lauridsen wrote that: “These settings are passionate, earthy, dramatic – red wine music!” Three operatic pieces complete the programme.

Soprano, choir and orchestra perform Poulenc’s Gloria, a work of great wit and charm. Barber’s famous Adagio will form a contrast to the Madrigali of the composer Morten Lauridsen. The Allegri Miserere is a meditative choral piece, famous for its solo soprano line. Saint Saëns’s cello concerto is complemented by three operatic pieces.
