Peter Lidbetter

Peter Lidbetter is a British/Irish bass from London. Recent opera engagements included Haly (L’italiana in Algeri), Simone (Gianni Schicchi) and King Fridolph (Cinderella – Alma Deutscher) all with Wexford Festival Opera; Don Basilio (il Barbiere di Siviglia), Kecal (The Bartered Bride) and Bartolo/Antonio (le nozze di Figaro) all in cover-performances with Garsington Festival Opera; and Bob Beckett (H.M.S. Pinafore) and Troisiéme Buveur (Margot la Rouge) with Opera Holland Park. He has also featured as a principal with Buxton Festival Opera, Heritage Opera and Opera Anywhere among others. Peter made his Royal Albert Hall solo debut at the 2023 BBC Proms performing the Ligeti Requiem with Edward Gardner and the London Philharmonic Orchestra. He is a principal guest artist with Edvard Grieg Korene in Bergen, Norway and most recently featured in the Bergen Nasjonale Opera production of Die Fledermaus in March 2024. Peter holds an MMus and PGdip in vocal performance from the Royal Northern College of Music, both with distinction, attaining the highest possible mark in his final assessment. At the RNCM he won the Elizabeth Harwood Memorial Award for graduating singers and the Brigitte Fassbaender Award for Lieder, and was a finalist in the Gold-Medal competition for all students.

Peter studied music at the University of Cambridge and was a choral scholar and, later, lay-clerk at St John’s College. He features on several recordings and was described as “an eloquent soloist” by BBC Music Magazine. He has been studying with Nicholas Powell since 2017.
